Tomorrow’s Engineers EEP Robotics Challenge

Today, 10 pupils from across KS3, represented the school at the Tomorrow’s Engineers EEP Robotics Challenge. The event took place at Belfast City Hall, where they had to complete a series of tasks and challenges. The main aim of the challenges was to promote future Engineers, with a focus specifically on humanitarian aid.

The first task of the day was the speed challenge to see what school had created and programmed the fastest robot. This would link in with a quick response that would be needed if a disaster was to take place and support required. The team scored well in this challenge finishing joint 2nd with two other schools. All other tasks on the day were judged by local engineers, with the results being presented at the end of the day.

The next task and the main aspect of the programming, the mat challenge. This was a series of tasks which required the robot to overcome the problems with both functional design and innovative programming. The pupils did well, even pushing the ramp challenge to its highest point. The only school on the day to achieve this task.

The team then had two presententaions to complete. One on their robot design to Engineers in an informal environment, telling them about the problems they came up against, as well as the solutions which they eventually used on the mat challenge. The second, a formal presentation about how humatariatin aid could be supported by new Technologies.

Finally, there was an unseen task on the day in which teams had to build a structure as high as possible with simply paper, glue, a hole punch and some plastic rivets.

After all marks had been compiled and confirmed, the Cambridge Contrive Crew came out on top with a total score of 160 out of a possible 180 maximum points. As well as the overall winning position, the team also won the award for the teamwork challenge task.

The pupils involved in the team were Illaria Grimason, Matthew Turtle, Jayden Robinson, Luke Woulahan, Jason Clack, David Gillan, Holly Frame, Luke Mc Connell, Paris Logan & Jack Keys.

The pupils were accompanied by Mr Johnston, Miss Connolly and Mr Brogan on the day.

This is a fantastic achievement for the pupils, who now head to Birmingham on 14th March to represent Northern Ireland in the UK finals. We would like to offer them a huge congratulations and best of luck wishes for the UK finals!
