Cambridge House’s 2nd XV took to the field to contest round 1 of the 2nd XV Cup against Wellington College on Wednesday 11th November. In the first half CHGS were playing into a stiff breeze and found it difficult to get out of their own 22 as a large Wellington pack put them under considerable pressure. A few mistakes in defence gifted Wellington 3 tries and a penalty with CHGS only able to reply with a penalty shortly before half time.
Half time score 22-3.
Playing the second half with the wind at their backs CHGS started brightly with a well finished try scored by their captain Niall Robinson. CHGS were unable to make the ball safe from the restart and another mistake allowed Wellington to move the ball wide quickly and score their fourth try. The floodgates opened after that and CHGS found themselves 44-8 down with 15 minutes on the clock.
The boys finally got into their stride and began using the wind to their advantage with George Harpur pinning Wellington back into their own half. Corey Patton, who had already had an excellent first half in defence, began to stamp his authority on the game and consistently made yards. Jonny Crawford scored CHGS’s second try which seemed to lift the team’s spirits and from then on it was all CHGS. Further tries from Jack Livingstone, Jordan McIntyre and Corey Patton (x2) and conversions from George Harpur got CHGS within touching distance of a monumental comeback but unfortunately the final whistle came too soon.
Final score 44-32.
