The STEM day, which took place on Wednesday 25th November, was a huge success for all year 9 pupils involved. Every pupil was given the opportunity, to see first-hand experience of STEM subjects being used in possible future careers.
The morning session focused on the Engineering aspect of STEM. The pupils had to manufacture a solar powered windmill, that could provide electricity for our future generations. Representatives from NIE spoke about their jobs and explained how they themselves, are currently aiming to achieve the same success the year 9 pupils had with their solar structures, except in real life scenarios.
The afternoon session focused on the Maths aspect of STEM. The pupils were given the opportunity to problem solve a variety of tasks, using good team work and communication skills. This allowed the pupils, to see the significance of Maths in their future careers and how it could be used to their benefit. They often ask the question," when am I going to use this in real-life?" I think this session removed any doubts they may have had, about the importance of Maths in their future career paths.
Mr Brogan would like to thank Peter Waugh from Sentinus, along with his wife Gill for their energetic and enthusiastic delivery of the sessions to the pupils. He would also like to thank the team from NIE and the year 13 mentors, who supported Peter & Gill in the afternoon.
